How to choose art for contemporary coastal homes?

Updated: Nov 1

This month I was invited by interior designer Matt Michel to assist in selecting artworks for his latest Coogee Beach home project.

My paintings have a distinctly contemporary feel which suits this modern beach home located in one of Sydney's most popular seaside suburbs.

I use colour and a blending of art styles to create my aesthetic. Developing a contemporary look is largely about being a bit less literal than what was done in the past

Traditional coastal homes featured saturated blues and overtly "beach" themed decor and art - think coral prints and palm trees etc. While a more contemporary look is more subtle.

This definition extends from the interior design through to the decor and artwork selection.

The gorgeous interior design by Matt Michel features subtle nods to contemporary coastal style in the oak flooring, white sheers, slatted timber entranceway divider, soft blue-grey (Dulux Palmer quarter) accent walls and featured wall paneling.

These details were accentuated by the selection of artworks which feature abstracted coastal landscapes and detailed figures, a signature of my work.

This contemporary coastal apartment felt a lot larger than it's footprint thanks to Matt's clever design. The soft colours in my artworks didn't overwhelm the space, rather, contributed to the atmosphere. While the larger scale of the paintings actually made the space feel bigger.

I was fortunate to meet the lovely owners of this Coogee Beach home. They put their trust in Matt and spoke about the importance of creating a contemporary, light filled space with luxurious finishes and ample storage. The family is delighted with the result.

And after seeing all my artworks insitu, they also became some of my recent art collectors!
