In Greek mythology, the Nereids are sea nymphs, the fifty daughters of the 'Old Man of the Sea', Nereus. Unlike mermaids, nereids appear fully human and do not manifest scales or a tail upon contact with water. Drawing on this story and her Greek heritage, Lauren captures female figures exploring an underwater world. The abstracted coastal landscape is impressionistic and portrays a feeling of calm and a connectedness to nature. The free expressive brushstrokes juxtapose the finer details of the women, a signature of Esplin's art.
